| Eyewitness:
The 1940s
The thought-provoking and moving Eyewitness series moves into
the turbulent decade of the 1940s. Listen to servicemen and women
as they remember the battles on air, sea and land; prisoners of
war describe how they coped, and civilians speak of bombs and
doodlebugs. The words of Winston Churchill, JB Priestley and the
irreverence of ITMA boosted morale in the darkest hours,
and throughout it all the BBC’s own correspondents all over
the world reported on this turbulent decade. These are the voices
of the past, speaking to the present in a remarkable example of
living history.

| Mark Gatiss
The
Vesuvius Club
The League of Gentlemen’s Mark Gatiss reads his
own bestselling novel. Lucifer Box is the darling of the Edwardian
belle monde: portrait painter, wit, dandy and rake -
the guest all hostesses must have. And most do. But few of his
connections or conquests know that Lucifer Box is also His Majesty’s
most daring secret agent, at home in both London’s Imperial
grandeur and the underworld of crazed anarchists and despicable
vice that seethes beneath. And so of course when Britain’s
most prominent scientists begin turning up dead, Lucifer Box is
the man for the job. He ruthlessly deduces and seduces his way
from his elegant townhouse at number 9 Downing Street (somebody
has to live there), to the seediest stews of Naples, in search
of the mighty secret society that may hold the fate of the world
in its claw-like hands - the Vesuvius Club.
