Media is an exciting area to be in at the moment and BBC Worldwide is the biggest media company in the UK. We are embarking on a journey to become a truly innovative place to work, where quality is at the heart of everything we do. This approach requires a cultural shift on our part, and is being achieved in a number of ways.
With more and more exposure and reliance on internet technologies to deliver the next generation of services such as BBCs excellent iPlayer, technology plays an increasingly vital role in moving the media business into the digital age. Working in an environment where change is normal pushes the need for higher quality maintainable solutions.
What's it like to work here...
Peter, Software Coach
I've been a professional developer for the last twelve years, with my last ten spent at BBC Worldwide. I think this speaks massively of how interesting, enjoyable and challenging it is to work here. In my current role as software coach, I'm responsible for increasing the quality of everything we develop. As you can imagine the scope is infinite. But, with a crack team of highly skilled and principled developers at the controls we stand a chance of making an impression.
We continue to raise the bar by doing the following:
- Regular presentations from our internal developers alternating with sessions from external experts and luminaries such as Martin Fowler, Steve Freeman, Scott Ambler, Eric Evans and Gojko Adzic.
- Weekly meetings with the lead developers to plan initiatives and get together backlogs for various strands of work such as our continuous integration platform.
- Software coaches, such as myself, helping developers make informed design decisions through pairing and empowering them as much as possible.
- Developers taking responsibility for all aspects of development including the build and deployment.
- Agile coaches helping project teams run in an efficient manner, deferring decisions until they need to be made.
- Engaging with the larger development community through different channels such as this site, conferences and blogs.
- Automation of tools that give developers timely feedback on various code quality metrics.
- By employing smart people.
Anybody considering joining BBC Worldwide really needs to demonstrate an attitude of continuous improvement alongside an open mind and the technical skills required to develop software in a fun, engaging and forward thinking manner. While we may be ahead of the curve in our attitude, we can only be measured objectively by the quality of software we deliver to all parts of BBC Worldwide.
