Authority
A Systems Analyst is responsible for defining how an information system is to be developed. This entails turning user requirements and business requirements into a set of functional specifications. These form the blueprint of the system. These should be constructed so that the developers and other members of the project team have sufficient detail to begin developing and are as productive as possible.
The blueprints, or designs of the system can be expressed in a variety of ways. We generally use techniques found in the Unified Modeling Language (UML), together with database modeling techniques and, increasingly, techniques from the agile community such as User Stories. We also use CASE tools extensively.
Our systems are becoming increasingly integrated as we strive to deliver greater business value and adopt a more ‘service oriented’ approach to our customers.

Systems analysts require a balanced mix of business and technical knowledge, interviewing and analytical skills and a good understanding of human behaviour. It is also important to have an understanding of the business environment within which BBC Worldwide operates. It is also important to be able to explain terminology and concepts - many of which might be highly specific to BBC Worldwide - to staff at various levels and in different roles.
The systems analysis area is also responsible for ensuring detailed knowledge of our systems and services is preserved and recorded, so that we can respond quickly and effectively to enquiries, proposals and new ideas. We collectively maintain a range of enterprise models on behalf of the wider IT community detailing our systems and services and how they are connected together.
The working relationships for a Systems Analyst are typically with Business Analysts (from which much of the higher-level requirements will flow), developers, and solutions architects. There are further working relationships with project managers, and other members of the wider IT community within BBC Worldwide. Often we also work with divisions within the business as a whole and the organisation's joint-venture and service partners. Less-frequently we deal with the wider corporate BBC. There is sometimes the requirement to represent the Systems Analysis discipline on specific initiatives and working groups.
