Top titles
The huge international appetite for big-budget factual programmes and series continued. Popular titles included Supervolcano, Himalaya with Michael Palin and Planet Earth, a major new BBC natural-history series due to air in 2006/07.
Planet Earth is currently the BBC’s most significant high-definition TV project and BBC Worldwide recognises the importance of investing in such cutting-edge technology. With Greenlight Media it has now secured finance for a $15m movie version of Planet Earth. The project builds on the success of the eight-part natural-history series The Blue Planet and its companion cinema film, Deep Blue.

Major drama and entertainment titles included Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes, Afterlife, two new films from award-winning writer/director Stephen Poliakoff and international productions of Strictly Come Dancing.
Independents
As part of its drive to grow its business with the independent
sector, BBC Worldwide agreed a number of major deals
during the year. In November 2004 a three-year output
agreement was signed with leading independent, Endemol
UK. This was the first deal of its kind for BBC Worldwide
and is expected to generate more than £5m over three years.
Programmes included BBC commissions such as Ready Steady
Cook, House Invaders and Ground Force. In January 2005
BBC Worldwide also signed a UK distribution agreement with
Hat Trick Productions for shows including Have I Got News
For You, Room 101 and The Kumars at No. 42. A similar deal
has been concluded with Ricochet Productions.
One of the key deals signed in Children’s was with
independent producr Tiger Aspect to distribute its new series Charlie
and Lola. BBC Worldwide has many ongoing
relationships with independents. A good example is Kudos,
for which it handled the dramas Hustle and Spooks and will
soon launch the new series Life on Mars.
