in 1999. As part of its new strategy, BBC Worldwide acquired more than 30 hours of ITV and Channel 4 commissioned drama. These included new work from Red Productions, Ecosse Films, Talkback Productions, Tiger Aspect Productions, World Productions, Tightrope Productions, Clerkenwell Films, Kudos Productions and
Zenith Productions.
This strategy will enable the company to market British
content and talent around the world even more effectively.
Over 40% of the programmes in its front catalogue are made by independent producers. In 2004/05 the Unit secured
several major new deals and intends to build on this success
over the next two years by winning distribution rights to even
more shows commissioned by other UK broadcasters.
At the same time BBC Worldwide aims to strengthen its
relationship with BBC production by continuing to be the
BBC’s key co-production and distribution partner.
The continuing development of successful formats, which can
then be produced for local markets, is also important to the
projected growth of the business.

margins in the UK from its relationships with both
UKTV and other broadcasters. Profitability increased
internationally, despite the weak dollar. In the United States
the proportion of higher-margin programme licensing deals
has risen across the year.
BBC Showcase
BBC Worldwide is the only TV distributor in the world to
hold its own annual screening event for buyers. This year
it featured more than 600 hours of new programmes and
saw the international launch of BBC One’s Saturday-night hit
Doctor Who. More than 500 buyers attended the event in
Brighton and record sales have been achieved.
