Introduction
International television sales are at the heart of BBC
Worldwide’s operation. The company is Europe’s most
successful exporter of television programmes and accounts
for around 50% of the UK’s total television exports.
In 2004/05 it sold more than 40,000 hours of content.
TV Sales has a well-established international infrastructure of
sales offices, its own annual screening event in BBC Showcase, which attracts major buyers from around the world, and a
valuable additional market for programmes via its Channels
business. BBC Worldwide is uniquely placed to be the
distributor of choice for UK programme producers and is
committed to providing a gold-standard level of service to all
production companies with whom it works.

more control over their programme rights, created an
opportunity for BBC Worldwide to acquire independently
produced programmes commissioned by other broadcasters.
BBC Worldwide had anticipated the growing importance
of the independent sector by setting up a dedicated
