The music archive
Early in 2005/06 BBC Music signed a breakthrough deal with the music company Universal to work together to make the most of its artists’ material from the BBC archive. This is part of the business’ licensing strategy to work with the record industry in driving value.

Music publishing
The BBC is the largest commissioner of TV music in Europe. BBC Music acquires the copyrights to many of these commissions and collects royalties via partnerships.

Radio-programme licensing
Radio International, which licenses radio programming to broadcast partners worldwide, consolidated its business this year. Its financial success is the result of the business renewing long-term contracts and reducing business costs. The development of services to new-media customers helped the business exceed budgeted expectations this year and is expected to help it grow further in the future.

BBC Motion Gallery

BBC Motion Gallery is migrating its business model from offline clip sales to digital sales and delivery of audio-visual images. BBC Motion Gallery makes more than 17,000 moving images from its extensive archive available online – these are programme and news clips from the BBC and CBS News Archive. Launched online in June 2004, it is used by media professionals in making television programmes, films, adverts and corporate videos. Licensed footage appeared in ten Emmy-nominated programmes in 2004, as well as in Hollywood movies.

Multimedia

In 2004/05 this software business moved from being a creator and publisher of content to a licensing model. This business restructure has led to a number of new opportunities with interactive-DVD companies and traditional computer-gaming concepts, as well as helping Multimedia improve operational performance during the year.
