Introduction
This business brings together those activities where new-media developments are playing a critical role in the delivery
of content to consumers. The division is focused on nurturing
new opportunities for commercial exploitation of rights and
content, including those for multimedia, mobile, broadband and
other interactive distribution. It also incorporates the internet
service provider beeb.net. The music business includes
music publishing, licensing and radio sales.
The BBC’s review of its commercial activities
concluded that, in the UK, BBC Worldwide should focus on
business activity that exploits BBC content and the BBC
brand. Its interactive telephony business, Audiocall, and the
TV schedule-data business, BDS, do not fall into this category
and so will be sold or partnered.
Strategy and performance
The Music & Radio unit increased its profitability by £1.4m.
This was attributable principally to the adoption of the new
licensing model in the records business and music publishing
achieving its highest ever level of receipts.
