Good Homes became the fastest-growing magazine in its market, with a 22% year-on-year increase following a redesign. Top Gear celebrated a 10% sales rise year-on-year. In addition to increased newsstand sales, its subscriptions were up 47%. Top of the Pops magazine achieved an ABC of 200,907, almost 75,000 copies more than its nearest competitor, Smash Hits. In 2005, the title went from monthly to fortnightly frequency. BBC Magazines publishes the UK’s top six bestselling pre-school titles. Children’s title Balamory increased its circulation by almost 60% in its second ABC period alone.
BBC magazines are distributed through Frontline Ltd, a joint venture with Emap and Haymarket. This partnership was extended in 2005 to include H. Bauer, making Frontline the UK’s market-leading distribution company.
Advertising sales
The advertising sales team achieved good results ahead of the industry average and continued to grow its revenue share over competitors. This performance reflects the centralisation of the sales team in 2003/04 and the development of central revenue
streams such as direct marketing in 2004/05. On top of this, our market-leading titles continue to offer a highly attractive environment to a broad range of key advertisers.

Subscriptions
BBC Magazines enjoyed an excellent subscriptions growth of 16% year-on-year, exceeding the half-million subscribers' mark in August 2004. In April 2005 BBC Magazines merged its subscriptions fulfilment company Galleon with Dennis Publishing’s Customer Interface Ltd to form Galleon CI Ltd. BBC Magazines aims to create a subscriptions fulfilment and marketing business that will be the UK ‘gold standard’.
Origin
In February 2004 BBC Worldwide purchased Origin
Publishing in Bristol, a publisher of quality specialist
magazines. The primary purpose was to provide a base
from which to publish BBC specialist interest titles more
efficiently. As a result, Wildlife, History and Music magazines
were moved to Origin. Results have already been excellent.
The three titles that moved are now profitable and their
circulations have increased. More recently, Gardens
Illustrated magazine has also been transferred there. A new
magazine, Sky at Night, was launched by Origin in May 2005.
BBC Worldwide is committed to selling the non-BBC titles
that Origin publishes during 2006.
