Performance
BBC Magazines increased its profit from £16.2m in 2003/04 to £22.0m. Profit was improved through strong performances from a number of titles including Top Gear, cost improvements and the move of some key titles to the specialist publisher Origin, acquired in February 2004. In addition, a net profit of £6.5m was realised through the sale of Eve. These increases were partly offset by investment in the relaunch of Good Homes and the cost of relocating titles to Origin in Bristol.

Circulation figures
The Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) reports on magazine performance in the UK every six months. The July to December 2004 figures showed some excellent copy sales growth for BBC Magazines. Overall, circulation for BBC Magazines rose 8% year-on-year. Thirteen BBC titles had year-on-year sales increases. Twenty achieved a period-on-period rise (compared to ABCs for January to June 2004).

Radio Times is the BBC’s longest-running commercial activity, launched in 1923. It’s at the premium end of a fiercely competitive, paid-for TV-listings-magazine market. However, it continues to sell more than 1.1m copies per week and is holding its profit levels.
