Introduction
BBC Worldwide’s Children’s business is responsible for the global exploitation of children’s brands through the acquisition, investment, development and licensing of intellectual property. The centralised management of this genre ensures brand integrity across all formats and territories. The business is best known for classic brands like Teletubbies and Tweenies, but also exploits a range of new, innovative programmes from the BBC and independent producers. It works across all media and so has a strong relationship with all other parts of BBC Worldwide’s business.

Strategy and performance
Children’s media is a hit-driven business, and identifying which new properties have stand-out appeal and international potential is a tough challenge. Eighteen months ago the Children’s business was incurring substantial losses and had over-invested in certain properties. Restructuring was put in place which reduced the operation’s costbase and a more selective approach to investment has since been adopted in a market where there is huge competition for rights. For example, this might mean an investment in only TV sales and DVD/video, rather than always acquiring rights across all media. Losses have been reduced and the business expects to be back to break-even by the close of 2005/06.
