Animal Planet and People+Arts
Created in March 1998 to develop television channels and factual programming for the international market place, the global alliance between BBC and DCI includes programme co-productions and a family of award-winning factual entertainment television channels comprising Animal Planet and People+Arts. Separately DCI also handles the marketing and distribution of BBC America (see below).
In 2004/05, Animal Planet broke even in Europe for the first time and launched in Germany and Italy. It is available in 227m homes and 160 countries worldwide. People+Arts is available in more than 14m homes across Latin America, Spain and Portugal.
BBC Canada and BBC Kids
BBC Worldwide operates two digital channels in Canada
with joint-venture partner Alliance Atlantis. The general
entertainment channel, BBC Canada, continues to perform
extremely strongly and ranks number one with its key target
audience: women aged 25-54. BBC Kids is equally successful
and now ranks number two among children aged 2-11.

UK•TV
BBC Worldwide’s joint venture with Foxtel and FremantleMedia had another strong year. In Australia UK•TV’s year-on-year reach grew by 11% and its average audience by 15%. UK•TV New Zealand consolidated its position as one of SkyDigital’s most-watched channels.
Wholly owned channels
BBC America
Launched in 1997, BBC America rapidly established a strong
reputation for innovative programming and marketing in
the world’s most competitive media market. The impact of
strong series such as The Office and Little Britain drove the
take-up of channel subscriptions, which now total more than
40m homes. The target is 45m homes – about half the cable
homes in the US – by the end of 2005.
In January 2005 a new management team was put in place,
supported by a significant increase in programme and
marketing budgets and a new strategy to increase ratings
and awareness. BBC America made a profit in 2004/05
for the second year running – a real achievement for such
a recent arrival on the US media scene. BBC America
continued to win critical acclaim with two prestigious
Peabody Awards for the thriller State of Play and the comedy
show The Kumars at No. 42. |
