BBC Worldwide’s new media business is active on every new media platform from broadband to console games. Its commercial activities extend the reach and reputation of the BBC brand, and earned revenues of £17 million during the year.

Broadband and interactive TV services were a growth area. Partners include Real Networks, whose RealOne SuperPass offers online access to Old Grey Whistle Test and Top Gear; OneTel (for a specially-built video-on-demand Tweenies site); and AOL. For AOL, BBC Worldwide has developed a broadband service to complement Teletubbies. An ongoing video-on-demand programme licenses content to operators in the UK, USA, Europe and Asia.
BBC Worldwide’s successful website syndication business supports the company’s television sales activity, offering bespoke websites and original or reversioned BBCi content to overseas broadcasters. Key titles included Walking with Beasts, Tweenies, Spooks, The Life of Mammals, Fimbles, Pyramid and Walking with Cavemen.

Internet Service Provider (ISP) beeb.net relaunched in December 2002 with a new design and new unmetered access services. beeb.net achieves consistently good reviews in the Internet press and regularly appears in Internet Magazine’s Top Ten ISP providers. It has now grown to more than 50,000 active users in the UK, with revenues up by 50% over the year.
